Biography
Kenny Arehart was just fourteen when he discovered a cheap, white Epiphone Strat in the back of his closet. His big brother Chris had left the guitar when he moved away to college, in the hopes that one day Kenny would find it. The discovery of that guitar signified the beginnings of Kenny's lifelong zeal for music.
By the end of high school, he had found his true passion: bass. However, songwriting was still a long way off. Kenny's college years, at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, were spent supporting local singer/songwriters, filling in for friends' bands, and hosting an open mic night at his campus coffee shop.
Kenny's break came when he was approached after a performance by fellow student AJ Minette. AJ wanted him to try out for his band, The Human Abstract. Kenny agreed, and over the next two years THA went from being unknown to a fixture on the Southern California metal scene. Together with producer Jamie King (Between the Buried and Me, He Is Legend), they recorded their debut album Nocturne, then toured the country with bands such as Oh Sleeper, Folly, Look What I Did, and Drop Dead, Gorgeous.
Near the end of this strenuous experience, Kenny lost the connection to the music he was playing, unsure whether he was unable to express himself or had just run out of ideas entirely. He retreated from performing and songwriting to pursue a career in animation and seek a new outlet for his creativity.
In summer of 2009, Kenny found the muse he had been searching for, and found himself penning his first new song in five years. Over the next year, he wrote nearly twenty more songs and suddenly found himself with an album on his hands. He now needed a producer and collaborator to help him refine and polish the songs, and he didn't have to look farther than his brother Chris. In addition to being classically trained in composition and performance, who better to understand the man behind the music than the one who left that beat-up guitar for Kenny so many years ago?
Working via Dropbox and FaceTime, the two pared the album down to ten solid tracks. What came out of their collaboration is From Under A Mossyrock, a labor of love that represents a deeply personal and introspective look at Kenny's life at the age of 25.
